In November 1913, a massive winter storm swept through the Great Lakes. Nicknamed the “White Hurricane,” the blizzard caused one of the largest inland maritime disasters in North American history, sinking 12 ships, damaging seven others, and claiming the lives of an estimated 250 sailors.  The SS James Carruthers, a Canadian freighter, was one of them.

Last year the wreck of the Carruthers was found, on the US side of Lake Huron.  Valerie Mills-Milde has written a compelling story based on the white hurricane and some of the Carruthers crew of 22 men who sank to their watery graves.

Valerie Mills-Milde is an award-winning author of three novels with a special interest in the history andsocial fabric of the Great Lakes. Valerie divides her time between Stratford and an old stone farmhouse outside of Blyth, Ontario. Her work in progress centres around Mary Riter-Hamilton, born in Teeswater, Ontario and Canada’s first female war artist.
