Behind the Good Old Days

A LEONOR LITERATI with Anne Milne and Barb Dorrington.

Anne Milne and Barb Dorrington use their two very different books as windows into childhood and community life across several generations of Ontario history.

Anne's "I Had a Swell Time" brings to life the diaries her mother, Bernice Hodgins, kept as a girl and teenager in 1930s Toronto, recording school, friendships, dating and the expectations placed on young women. Barb's The Trauma Monster moves ahead to Southwestern Ontario in the 1960s and 70s, when children walked to school alone, rode bikes everywhere and played outside for hours. She looks at how our ideas about childhood freedom, safety and community responsibility began to change.

Each author gives her own presentation, followed by a shared Q&A and conversation with the audience.
