A LEONOR LITERATI Britain in Shakespeare's time is known for its great voyages and early settlements in what is now Canada and the USA. What is lesser known is that during this Elizabethan period, England was perfecting its systems of colonization in Ireland, its nearest neighbour, where it had already ruled  for 400 years!  During the “Elizabethan Plantations” the ideas and practices of colonization became more violent and more formalized.  We are going to learn about the England/Ireland relationship through the centuries, the colonizing legacy over time and how it compares to our own colonial history in Canada.

Leading our discussion will be Dr. Angèle Smith, Professor and former Chair of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) in Prince George, BC.  She studies colonization, migration, identity and place, having done research in Ireland and Canada for more than 35 years.
